For centuries the Tutsi (an extremely tall people) dominated the
Hutus (90% of the population). In 1959, civil war broke out and
the Tutsi power came to an end. In 1961 the monarchy was
abolished. Rwanda had belonged to the Belgian United Nations
trusteeship of Rwanda-Urundi, became fully independent on July 1,
1962. A military coup in 1973 overthrew the government. Rwanda
is one of the most densely populated countries in Africa, with
all land being used and much of it subject to severe erosion.
Many economic and social improvement programs with foreign aid
and volunteer labor have help over the recent years.
